Dr. Mylswamy Annadurai often hailed as the 'Moon Man of India,' is a distinguished Indian scientist with an illustrious career spanning over 36 years with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Dr. Mylswamy's contributions to ISRO are monumental, particularly his pivotal role in two of India's most significant space missions—Chandrayaan-1 and Mangalyaan. As the Project Director of Chandrayaan-1, India's first mission to the Moon, he led a team of engineers and scientists to successfully design and develop the lunar exploration mission, which included instrumentation from international space agencies like NASA, ESA, and JAXA. This mission not only marked India's entry into lunar exploration but also set a benchmark for international cooperation in space science. Chandrayaan-1 earned numerous national and international accolades, including the prestigious Space Pioneers Award for Science and Engineering.
In addition to his work on Chandrayaan-1, Dr. Mylswamy was also the Program Director of the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), India's first mission to Mars. This mission, which was lauded for being the most cost-effective Mars mission ever, showcased India's growing prowess in space exploration and solidified ISRO's position on the global stage. - Dr. Annadurai received the Space Pioneers Award for Science and Engineering at the 28th International Conference on Space Development in Florida, USA (2009) for his work on Chandrayaan-1.
- As Project Director, he led India’s first mission to the Moon, which not only put India on the lunar exploration map but also paved the way for future planetary missions. The mission received numerous accolades both nationally and internationally.
- As Program Director, Dr. Annadurai played a crucial role in the successful launch and operation of India’s first Mars mission. This mission was globally recognized for being the most cost-effective Mars mission, costing just about $74 million.
- Dr. Annadurai was listed among the ”100 Global Thinkers of 2014” and topped the Innovators list, highlighting his significant contributions to space technology.
